University Of Western Cape World Ranking, The University of the Western Cape has taken the number seven spot on the latest university ranking scale – Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings is reported to be the world’s most trusted ranking system which shows the future of Africa as far as Higher education is concerned.
It is said that Times Higher Education is the world’s most authoritative source of information about higher education. Designed specifically for professional people working in higher education and research, the weekly magazine was founded in 1971 and has been online since 1995.
The latest university ranking found that South Africa dominates many top spots in this ranking system which involves 15 African universities. The rankings were finalised based on the scores of research influence, and the institutions had to have published a minimum of 500 research papers in the five-year period assessed, with at least 50 papers per year. According to the THE, UWC had an 84.61 score (1154.77 publications).
The University of the Western Cape is among the eight leading universities in SA under the top 15 on the continent included in the ranking, topping sister Universities such as the University of Johannesburg (UJ), the University of Pretoria (UP) and the University of South Africa (Unisa).

TES Global published an article on the rankings and reported Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, as saying: “This is an experimental and preliminary ranking based solely on research, and only on one aspect of research – how many times research papers are cited by other academics.
When we develop a full Africa University Ranking, we expect to add many more indicators, examining things like a university’s economic contribution, its civic engagement, and of course, its teaching. So the Africa Universities Summit at the end of July in Johannesburg presents the perfect opportunity to help shape this future ranking and to ensure that Times Higher Education develops the most appropriate and relevant ranking for Africa, in full consultation with African universities.”

In the BRICS rankings, the University of Cape Town comes in at number 14, followed by the University of the Witwatersrand at 28, Stellenbosch at 34, University of Pretoria at 49, the University of Johannesburg at 67, the University of KwaZulu-Natal at 68, Rhodes University at 79, and the University of the Western Cape at 100.
