The Department of Nursing Science at the University of Pretoria, as a pioneer in the nursing profession, offered the first degree programme in Nursing in South Africa and was founded in 1956.
Since its inception, the Department has played a leading role in nursing education in South Africa. The qualification in Nursing Science strives for excellence in its teaching and research programmes, and its focus is on the promotion of the intellectual, cultural and personal development of all its students.

Undergraduate Degree
Bachelor of Nursing Science (B Cur)
What does the degree entail?
Being a nurse means being part of the large team of professional workers dedicated to rendering health services to the community. It requires being prepared to understand, accept and trust people whose way of life, beliefs, values and culture may totally differ from one’s own, and to serve them and care for them with one’s knowledge and personal aptitude. Nursing Science equips one to serve others and to enrich their lives. The name of the degree means caring.
The course covers four years of full-time study. During the course, students are prepared for four career fields, namely:
General Nursing
Caring for people with different needs in different situations, such as in hospitals, clinics and private practices.
Community Nursing
This is aimed at primary health care. It includes the prevention of diseases and the promotion of health, the rendering of clinical nursing services and the rehabilitation of people in the general community.
Psychiatric Nursing
The emphasis is on the mental health of individuals, families and the community.
Midwifery Nursing
In this field, the emphasis is on providing in the unique physical, psychic and mental needs of a woman and her baby within the family and the community.
This entails that students have to work fixed hours during the semester and also spend certain holiday periods doing actual nursing.
Students register with the South African Nursing Council as student nurses.
What can I do with my degree?
You can work in various hospitals and clinics in the community and also run a private nursing practice. The state and the private sector offer a wide variety of opportunities. The following fields of nursing specialisation are available: general medical and surgical nursing science; emergency nursing, theatre nursing, community nursing; psychiatric nursing; midwifery nursing; paediatric nursing; neonatal nursing; nursing management and nursing education.
Admission requirements
Mathematics, Physical Science, Biology or Physiology are recommended subjects. Selection is based on academic merit. An AP-score Grade 11(25) and Grade 12(24) is required. A personal interview is conducted with every applicant. An NSC for degree purposes is required with the following minimum subject requirements and AP-score per subject, indicated in brackets:
- English (4);
- Additional Language (4);
- Four other subjects (4);
- Life Orientation (4) – Life Orientation is excluded from the APS-calculation.
Admission to the course is subject to Departmental selection, and applications close on 31 May of the preceding year. Selection also includes writing the University’s admission test.
Course content
The syllabus consists of subjects forming the basis for nursing, namely the social, biological and nursing sciences. The subjects within the various sciences are presented by experts of the University of Pretoria.
First year: Anatomy, Nursing Studies, Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Medical Terminology, Philosophy, Physiology, Nursing Practice Education, Computer Literacy and Language Skills, Ethnic Language.
Second year: Community Development, Psychology, Integrative Health Care, Microbiology, Nursing Studies, Physiology, Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Nursing Practice Education, Health Care Systems.
Third year: Pharmacology, Nursing Studies, Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Nursing Practice Education.
Fourth year: Health Research, Nursing Studies, Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Nursing Practice Education.

Background
To keep abreast of the latest technology and trends in any profession, post-basic education is encouraged by all tertiary institutions, and more so by the University of Pretoria. The Department of Nursing Science at the Faculty of Health Sciences offers the Baccalaureus Curationis (Instructionis et Administrare) (B Cur I et A) degree, aimed at enabling nursing professionals to be a cut above the rest.
The B Cur I et A course branches into Clinical and Non-Clinical courses.
Clinical Courses
The clinical fields of specialisation programmes are presented over a period of at least two years.
The fields of specialization are:
- Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Critical Care: General
- Medical and Surgical Nursing Science: Emergency Nursing
- Operating Theatre Nursing
Please note that these courses are not necessarily offered every year as the number of applicants per speciality determines the cost-effectiveness of the programmes.
Subjects presented
- First year: Clinical Nursing Science I (KVG 110 & KVG 120), Systems of Nursing Practice I (VPT 160) and Nursing Dynamics (VDN 110 & VDN 120). The first year is a generic year for all clinical specialities.
- Second year: Clinical Nursing Science II (KVG 250 & KVG 260), Systems of Nursing Practice II (VPT 260) and Nursing Science Practice (VGK 201). The second year is the year of specialisation.
Entry requirements
- Matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
- Proof of registration at the SANC as General Nurse
- For Child Nursing and Neonatal Nursing, registration as Midwife/Accoucheur is also required
- At least one year experience in the workplace relevant to the area of specialisation is compulsory.
- A post in the field of speciality at an accredited clinical facility with formal approval of studies by the particular clinical facility.
These programmes are only presented in Pretoria and require weekly attendance. Examinations take place during June and November each year

Non-clini cal courses
The fields of specialization in the Non-Clinical course are:
- Community Nursing,
- Nursing Education
- Nursing Management
These courses are presented as first-year subjects of the BCur IetA. Programmes are presented as contact classes supported by paper-based workbooks. The lectures commence in the first week of February and are presented seven times per subject per semester.
The following subject combinations are required:
- Community Nursing Science: Community Nursing Science ( GVP 110 & GVP 120) and Nursing Dynamics (VDN 110 & VDN 120)
- Nursing Education: Nursing Education Theory (VOW 110 & VOW 120), Didactics of Nursing Education (DNE 110, DNE 120 and DNE 160), and Nursing Dynamics (VDN 110 & 120)
- Nursing Management: Nursing Management, Business and Organisational Psychology (BDO and Nursing Dynamics (VDN 110 & VDN 120)
Practica
Community Nursing
320 hours of clinical learning practica is required; part of which will take place during a block at Prinshof Campus (University of Pretioria).
Other courses
The other courses have practica and are done informally as well as formally. The details of the practice will be communicated during contact sessions.
Duration of the programme
3 Years
It is possible to complete all the subjects required for the registration of one qualification with the SA Nursing Council (SANC) in one year.
Entry requirements
- Matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
- Proof of registration with the SANC as General Nurse
- Midwife/Accoucheur is compulsory for Community Nursing Science
- At least two years’ applicable experience as registered nurse for the courses in Nursing Education and Nursing Management (This is not applicable if you want to register for Community Nursing only.)
Medium of instruction
The medium of instruction is English, but students may write assignments, tests and examinations in either Afrikaans or English.
Examinations
Examinations are written in June and November of each year.

- A fully completed application form
- A certified copy of the matriculation/Grade 12 certificate
- Certified copies of all SANC registration certificates
- A copy of the 2010 or 2011 – SANC receipt (the 2012-receipt must be submitted at registration 2012)
- A certified copy of the first page of your identity document
- A marriage certificate or divorce order, if applicable
- A letter from your employer, stating that you have permission to study

Master of Nursing Science (M Cur) Background
The vision of the Department of Nursing Science is to contribute directly to the South African healthcare services by producing nursing specialists through relevant, nationally and internationally comparable programmes. Registered nurses with the potential for postgraduate studies come from all corners of South Africa. We need to reach these talented people to help them to become well-equipped leaders of the nursing profession.
Master’s degree by virtue of dissertation
A student has to complete a module in Nursing Research Methodology and a dissertation. A bachelor’s degree in Nursing Science and an applicable post-basic qualification are required for admission. The master’s degree may only be awarded in the field of the prerequisite degree or equivalent qualification. The duration of the programme is at least one academic year. The above-mentioned degree is presented in the same specialisation areas as for the master’s degree by virtue of course work.
Master’s degree by virtue of course work
The programme extends over two years. The curriculum comprises the chosen field of specialisation in Advanced Nursing Science, Advanced Dynamics of Nursing Practice, Nursing Research Methodology and a research mini-dissertation. Contact classes take place at the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Pretoria. During these contact sessions, students are exposed to a variety of learning experiences, such as lectures by experts, multidisciplinary discussion sessions, high-quality information technology, seminars, group work sessions, accompaniment by expert lecturers and co-operative learning with peer group members.

- For the non-clinical master’s degree: another approved bachelor’s degree may also be considered

Clinical programmes:
- A student must hold at least a part-time position in an accredited clinical facility, deemed applicable by the Head of the Department for the field of study for the master’s degree;
- Access to clinical facilities related to the area of specialisation;
- Registration with the SANC;
- Registration with the SANC non-clinical programmes.

Doctor Philosophiae (PhD)
Doctoral degree
The doctoral degree is a research degree where students work individually with an academic supervisor who provides the intellectual guidance, professional advice and support to complete a thesis.
Doctor Philosophiae (PhD)
A student will only be admitted to doctoral degree studies if he or she is in possession of a master’s degree. The PhD degree study is conferred by virtue of a thesis. A complete research proposal in respect of the proposed thesis must be submitted to the Department of Nursing Science before a student will be allowed to register. A student who has not already passed Nursing Research Methodology (VNM 800 or its equivalent from another institution) must register for, and attend Applied Research Methodology (TNM 800).
