University Of Pretoria M&E Courses, Monitoring and Evaluation is increasingly recognized as the cornerstone for effective program management and is critical for organizational sustainability. A continuously increasing need for suitably skilled monitoring and evaluation project managers has been identified as a priority area by various stakeholders active in different sectors and industries; e. g globally- funded sponsorships often require evidence of effective monitoring and evaluation systems prior to awarding funds.

The purpose of the Advanced Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation is to equip managers across a variety of sectors with the knowledge and skills to successfully design and implement sound monitoring and evaluation systems from program/project initiation to close-out.
This programme is structured in such a way that it guides learners to apply monitoring and evaluation principles within the context of their unique work environment.

Who Should Enrol

Any individual who have identified a need to further develop their monitoring and evaluation knowledge and skills, additional to their current vocational focus; e.g. a manager whose performance agreement demands the effective design and management of monitoring and evaluation systems for a program or organization.

Course Design

The program has been designed to allow students to learn in the following ways:

  • Self-study of the prescribed course manuals,
  • Attending and participating in three (3) workshops facilitated by a monitoring and evaluation subject matter expert,
  • Applying the theory, principles, techniques and tools in the context of a workplace project,
  • Presentation of project monitoring and evaluation plan on the chosen workplace project to fellow students during workshops,
  • Reflective assignments on lessons learnt during project implementation.

Module Outcomes

The programme consists of three modules with three study units each. The course consists of 3 modules, each module counts towards 40 credits. The total number of credits for the course amounts to 120 credits.

· Learn how to construct an organizational learning agenda and to identify evaluation priorities and evaluation questions

Before the start of Workshop 1, students must identify a project/programme that they’re involved in. Students should bring as details of this project to the first workshop. This includes all programme documents, proposals and reports that the student has access to.

Assessment

All students are assessed through both formative and summative assessment opportunities. All assessment activities in this programme are designed to assess participants’ competencies against the curriculum outcomes. The assessment strategy is further designed to take into account that participants are working full-time and that different people have different learning styles.

A student who fail the exam 40% and 49%, qualify for a supplementary exam for that specific module. Students must pass all three modules with at least 50% to be awarded the Advanced Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation. Participants, who pass with an average mark of 75% or above, will be awarded the AdvCert (Monitoring and Evaluation) ‘pass with distinction’.

Accreditation

NQF 6 (120 Credits), CHE accredited, Department of Higher Education and Training registered, SAQA number: 91831.
Accredited, according to the HPCSA’s Medical and Dental Board Guidelines for Healthcare Professionals for 30 Ethical CEUs on level 2.

Certification

On the successful completion of the programme an Advanced Certificate in Monitoring and Evaluation qualification is awarded.
