About the Department

The critical performance of the areas of the Department are as follows:
  • Ensuring the continued financial sustainability of the University;
  • Ensuring compliance to legislation/standards/codes and the requirements of bodies such as the Auditor-General and the Department of Higher Education and Training;
  • Ensuring proper accountability on the use of scarce resources, including of public funding, and on the safeguarding of the University’s assets;  and
  • Providing financial information to optimise the use of UP resources and to enable the University to reach its strategic goals.

Mission
The Finance Department actively supports the University’s strategic goals.  Within our sphere of influence, we are committed to ensuring the success of the UP Strategic Plan 2025.

Financial Management

On 1 January 2002 history was made when the first independent Department of Financial Management at a South African university was formed in the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences. The Department aims to deliver quality students to auditing firms, high profile financial institutions and other key players in the South African economy.
