University Of Cape Town Logo

University Of Cape Town Logo

University Of Cape Town Logo,
The UCT logo is used in two main ways – as the “Circular Logo” and as the “Horizontal Logo”.
The logo is a complete unit, with both visual and textual elements. These cannot and should not be separated or used one without the other. Whenever the logo appears, it must appear in full.
There are very clear guidelines that govern the use of the circular and horizontal logos, outlined below.

Primary use

The logo is made up of two colours (see corporate colours section). The logo is best used in these 2 colours against a white background.
Other logo usages such as the crest, “University of Cape Town” on its own, or a simplified version of the crest, are possible. For approval and advice in this regard please contact Azraa Dawood on +27 (0)21 650 3748. This permission will not be unreasonably withheld.

Secondary use

In certain cases, eg black and white documents, the logo will need to be used in black and white (or greyscale). When used against a white background:

  • the logo is applied in black
  • the corporate blue in the crest is changed to 40% black
  • the font is used in black.

When the logo is used against a black background, the crest is surrounded by a white border to clearly differentiate it from the background and the font is white.

Other applications

When the logo is placed against various coloured backgrounds, the font will need to be adjusted depending on the colour but the crest remains unchanged. In most cases the font will stay blue on a light background or be changed to white on a darker background.
An exception is made when the background colour has the same tonal values as the blue, making the font unreadable. An example of this is shown at the bottom – the font on the light grey (silver) background is changed to black.

Other important points regarding the UCT logo use

Minimum size – the logo must be legible and may not be used smaller in width than:

  • 30 mm in diameter (for the circular logo)
  • 60 mm (for the horizontal logo).

The logo may not be stretched or distorted in any way.
Combination with other logos – the UCT logo and colours are the primary identifiers for all areas of the university. The use of logos developed independently is prohibited and it is strongly recommended that faculty logos be used in conjunction with the university logo.
Guest logos – if a guest or affiliate logo is used, the UCT logo should always appear first, while the guest logo may be inserted to the right or underneath the UCT logo. Always ensure that adequate space is maintained between logos.

Logo guidelines

The logo and the approved colour scheme are important visual representations of the university. If you use the UCT logo, please follow these guidelines in order to promote a consistent, recognisable and professional image.
Important note: These pages summarise the guidelines for the usage of UCT’s multilingual logo. For a copy of the full set of guidelines, or answers to any questions regarding the UCT logos, stationery or other corporate identity elements please contact Kylie Hatton on +27 (0)21 650 2860.

Some initial pointers

The university’s positioning
Over the past decade, the University of Cape Town has been ranked as Africa’s top tertiary education institution – a position achieved through the quality of its research and its high academic standards.
The university name
While the abbreviation “UCT” is used in internal communications such as these guidelines, the full name “The University of Cape Town” must be used when referring to the university in any external communication. The acronym UCT is allowed, but only after the full name has been already been used. The title “Cape Town University” does not exist and is never to be used.

Why have guidelines?

The purpose of any corporate identity programme is to create an easily recognisable visual image of an organisation or brand. A carefully designed corporate identity system connects all UCT’s activities and services.
UCT’s corporate identity is a visible symbol of everything UCT stands for. It makes a positive contribution towards promoting UCT’s educational activities and services and is publicly perceived as UCT’s corporate signature.
The guidelines for logo usage contain comprehensive rules and standards to govern the effective and uniform use of the organisation’s corporate identity. Please ensure that you adhere to these guidelines when communicating as a representative of the university.
