Module presented in English
Purpose: This work integrated learning (WIL) module is primarily focused on student orientation to the Pulp and Paper work environment. Students completing this module will gain knowledge and skills on Health and safety issues prior to entering the paper/pulp mill. In the mill, the student adapts and acclimatizes to the working environment and learns about the process/processes.

Pulp and Paper Chemistry II – PCY2601

Module presented in English
Purpose: To provide the Student with an introductory knowledge of the science of the following: Fibrous materials used in pulp and paper processes, Paper properties and testing methods used for paper quality control and the processing of water such that both the inflow to a pulp or paper mill and the effluent are suitable both in terms of quality and environmental legislative requirements. Students completing this module will develop a thorough understanding of these concepts and will be better equipped to perform their function as Process Controllers in the pulp and paper production environment.

Purpose: To provide the Student with Advanced plant operation, troubleshooting and system development skills. The third period of training is primarily focused on the application of chemical engineering techniques related to the Pulp and Paper Industry. The student will be concerned with advanced plant operations, troubleshooting, improvements and optimisation projects.

Purpose: To provide the student with an overview of the pulp and paper industry in South Africa. The overview will cover the history of papermaking, markets and stakeholders, raw materials, pulping and papermaking processes.
