Purpose: Students who complete this module can conduct basic landscape maintenance activities and installation procedures and compile basic landscape construction documentation. Students will apply principles from soil science and other sciences such as chemistry, biology, horticulture in an integrated way while assessing landscape design, construction and installation processes. Participating students will also develop an appreciation of landscape aesthetics and construction. These skills are fundamental to and essential for landscape applications and can be applied in landscaping enterprises.
Environmental Studies I – ENS2602

This knowledge will be applied in production and sales processes within the horticultural industry.

Purpose: Students who complete this module can provide a suitable growing environment for a variety of plants by preparing appropriate growth media for the plants, watering and fertilizing the plants, and applying pruning techniques and pest control measures. Purpose: Students who complete this module can identify a range of indigenous and exotic plants in a real workplace situation and can identify the characteristics, requirements and horticultural applications of these plants. They then can apply this knowledge to select plants for particular environments and settings for the purposes of landscaping and garden design, and for specialised uses in indoor and outdoor settings and a large-scale environmental projects. They can also apply their plant knowledge to perform a number of routine plant maintenance activities in a real situation specifically pruning, pest management and weed control.

Purpose: The aims of research, the research topic, title and research problem, literature review, research design: population and sampling types, quantitative and qualitative research methodology, validity of conclusions, data-collecting methods and measuring instruments in quantitative research, qualitative research designs, data analysis and interpretation of results, report writing and the research proposal. Students registering for this module are required to have regular access to a computer and the Internet in order to download or read essential study material from the myUnisa module site and the World Wide Web. This module will be presented online, and only the first tutorial letter will be posted for this module. Formative assessment must be completed online and summative assessment for this module comprises a non-venue based e-portfolio.
