Bradlow Foundation Overseas Scholarship

Over the past three decades the Bradlow Foundation has provided scholarships to St. John’s College, Cambridge for PhD studies.  The Foundation is at the moment on the lookout for postgraduate students of academic excellence (in any field of study) who display sound social awareness for the award of such scholarships.

The scholarship is for PhD studies only and is renewable for three years subject to satisfactory progress being made by the student in question.  The scholarship covers air travel to and from London at the inception and completion of the studies, university and college fees, accommodation and some pocket money.

In order to qualify for this scholarship, candidates must first gain admission to St. John’s College, Cambridge, whereafter the Bradlow Foundation will consider whether or not the scholarship will be awarded.  The Foundation normally decides in June of a particular year whether to award the scholarship for the academic year starting in October of that year.

It would accordingly be appreciated if you would circulate this letter to heads of academic departments so that potentially suitable candidates may be encouraged to apply to St. John’s College, Cambridge for admission as PhD students with a view to qualifying for consideration for the scholarship.

Call for Applications

2018 Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) on Civic Engagement for Student Leaders

Deadline for Applications: CLOSED

2018 SUSI Application Form

The Public Affairs Officer of the U.S. Embassy invites you to nominate eligible students to apply for the 2018 Study of the U.S. Institute (SUSI) on Civic Engagement for Student Leaders.  Participants will include student leaders interested in civic engagement from student leaders from Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, South Africa and Zimbabwe.  This is a very competitive process and those students who are shortlisted based on their application and recommendation will be interviewed by members of the U.S. Mission in South Africa. Applicants must be second- or third-year university students.  The program is focused on civic engagement, so successful applicants are those who can demonstrate how they are already making a difference in their communities.

The Study of the U.S. Institutes (SUSI) for Student Leaders are intensive academic programs whose purpose is to provide groups of undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States, while simultaneously enhancing their leadership skills.  Institutes include a four-week academic residency and a one-week study tour to a different part of the United States.  Leadership sessions and community service activities, as well as getting to know Americans, are also integral components of the Institutes.  Participants are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the program.

The SUSI for Student Leaders will focus on democracy, citizenship, and civic activism.  The four-week academic residency will provide students with an overview of how citizens have shaped U.S. history, government, and society both as individuals and groups.  The program will define civic engagement, examine its development in the U.S., and explore topics such as citizenship, community building, economic development, grassroots activism, political leadership, and volunteerism.  Other topics such as civil rights, entrepreneurship, ethics, leadership, and media will be discussed.  Students will also have the opportunity to leave the classroom to meet with community leaders, entrepreneurs, and representatives of nonprofit organizations.  The academic residency will be complemented by an educational tour that will take participants to another area of the U.S. where they will meet with local, state, private, and not-for-profit organizations working in the field.  The Institute will then conclude with a visit to Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Government will cover all participant costs, including domestic travel and ground transportation, housing and subsistence.  Housing will be in university dorms.  Participants may be expected to share a room and bathroom with another student of the same gender.  Most meals will be provided at campus facilities, though participants may have access to a kitchen to cook some meals on their own.

Completed application forms from applicants in the Western, Northern or Eastern Capes should be sent to the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Consulate in Cape Town by October 4, 2017 and should be addressed to Kim Williams ([email protected]).  Ms. Williams can be reached at 021-702-7392 with further questions.
